Urban Arc: Purpose of work

This series shows an urban dawn, as seen from a downtown Chicago parking garage. Rather than the landscape image of a skyline backlit in orange, these abstract images have been cropped to highlight the crude cracks and fissures of an industrial structure at daybreak. What made this setting so visually compelling and what inspired me to capture it was not only how the arc of industrial architecture framed the dawn, but also how the fluorescent lighting of the parking structure altered the actual colors of the sunrise. The warm reds and oranges we associate with sunlight have given way to the cool, green phosphors of artificial lighting. This green cast, combined with the textural elements of the garage, in effect, changes the character of dawn, as we normally perceive it. While we tend to think of a sunrise as illuminating, the photographs in “Urban Arc” show a more austere side of daybreak.
